Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos were founded on August 14, 1959 when minor league baseball owner Bob Howsam was awarded an American Football League charter franchise. The Broncos won the first-ever American Football League game over the Boston Patriots on September 9, 1960. On August 5, 1967, they became the first ever AFL team to defeat an NFL team after beating the Detroit Lions in a preseason game.
In 1995, the Broncos debuted a new head coach, Mike Shanahan, and a new rookie running back, Terrell Davis. During the 1997 season, both would help guide the Broncos to their first Super Bowl victory, a 31–24 win over the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Although Elway completed only 12 of 22 passing attempts, throwing one interception and no touchdowns, Davis rushed for 157 yards and a Super Bowl-record three touchdowns to earn the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award – this while overcoming a severe migraine headache that caused him blurred vision. The Broncos repeated as Super Bowl champions the following season, defeating the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII, 34–19. Elway was named Super Bowl MVP, throwing for 336 yards and a touchdown.
Broncos won two of their 5 Super Bowl appearances. The Broncos lost Super Bowl XXI to the New York Giants, 39–20; Super Bowl XXII to the Washington Redskins, 42–10; and Super Bowl XXIV to the San Francisco 49ers, 55–10, the most lopsided scoring differential in Super Bowl history.
Overall, Denver has reached the Super Bowl six times, winning it in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
Denver was seeded number two in the AFC behind the Colts. On January 14, 2006, the Broncos defeated the two-time defending champion New England Patriots, in the divisional round. Bronco’s win ending the Patriots’ chance of becoming the first NFL team ever to win three consecutive Super Bowl championships. The last team with a chance of winning three consecutive Super Bowls before the Patriots was the Broncos themselves.

Denver Broncos Tickets – Shanahan Out After 14 Seasons
Many teams drop their head coaches after a disappointing season. After 14 years at the helm, however, letting head coach Mike Shanahan go has a little more weight. Not only was Shanahan the Denver Broncos’ head coach, he was also their vice president of football operations, meaning he had a large amount of the control over personnel choices. The firing came after the Broncos ended their hopes of a playoff berth with a 52-21 loss to the San Diego Chargers. Just weeks before, the Broncos seemed to have their division all but won, but a poor performance in the last games ended their season. The search is now on to find a replacement for Shanahan, a search the Broncos haven’t had to do in more than a decade.
During his time with the Broncos, Shanahan led to team to two Super Bowl wins and appearances in three conference championship games as well as seven post-seasons. Nine of his seasons boasted winning records. The Broncos finished this season with an 8-8 record. The reasons for Shanahan’s dismissal come mostly from his inabilities as a general manager rather than his shortcomings as a coach. The Broncos’ defense has struggled immensely as of late, and Shanahan was in charge of picking the players for the defense. They were ranked near the bottom of the league this year in defense by allowing 448 points. They also ranked near the bottom in the number of yards allowed. Even so, the firing came as a shock to many players, who voiced their surprised following the dismissal.
Shanahan first started his coaching career in the college ranks as a 20-something in the 1970s. He started his NFL career with the Broncos as their receivers coach in 1984 before moving to the offensive coordinator position the next season. He became the head coach of the then Los Angeles Raiders in 1988 until he was famously let go midseason the next year by owner Al Davis. He returned to the Broncos as a quarterbacks coach for the rest of the 1989 season and the 1990 season. He again moved to offensive coordinator with the Broncos in 1991 before taking the same position with the San Francisco 49ers in 1992. He remained in that position until he became the Broncos head coach in 1995. While at San Francisco, they saw some of their most prolific years, winning one Super Bowl and making it to two other NFC championship games.
After dismissing Shanahan, the Broncos moved on to looking for a replacement. One of the names on the list is the New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels is also being looked at by other teams searching for a head coach. It is also rumored that they are eyeing New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Tampa Bay Buccaneers secondary coach Raheem Morris. Unlike other struggling programs like the Cleveland Browns, the Broncos are expected to be an attractive draw for coaches. Denver Broncos Tickets – McDaniels Named New Coach
The Denver Broncos have ended their search for their 12th head coach and named New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the position. The search started after the Broncos fired longtime coach Mike Shanahan after finishing the 2008 season 8-8. This record also came after the Broncos seemingly had their division won with four games left in the seasons. With four straight losses to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Carolina Panthers, the Buffalo Bills and the San Diego Chargers, the Broncos saw their post season hopes slip away, and along with it went the job of Shanahan. During his time with the Broncos, Shanahan led the team to two Super Bowl victories and multiple playoff appearances, but the results haven’t been so stellar as of late. Along with McDaniels, Mike Nolan was named the Broncos next defensive coordinator.
The 32-year-old McDaniels may seem young for a head coach as some of his players may be older than him, but that doesn’t mean he is scarce on experience. Before becoming a coach, McDaniels was a quarterback and wide receiver for John Carroll University. Soon after graduation, he became a graduate assistant at Michigan State University under coach Nick Saban. He joined the Patriots in 2001 as a personnel assistant. The next year, his skills had earned him a promotion to coaching assistant. He was moved to quarterbacks coach in 2004, working with star quarterback Tom Brady to his best passer rating yet of his career. The next year, he helped Brady improve on his career-best yardage. In 2006, he took on offensive coordinator duties along with continuing his position as quarterbacks coach. McDaniels was key in Brady’s 50 touchdown passes in 2007. He faced an even greater challenge in the 2008 season when Brady went down with a season-ending injury, and McDaniels had to groom backup Mat Cassel as the starter. Unlike other departures from the Patriots, McDaniels left with a glowing recommendation from coach Bill Belichick.
Nolan was previously in the news when he was fired midway through this season as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and replaced by Mike Singletary. Nolan is actually no stranger to the Broncos as he was the linebackers coach under Dan Reeves. Prior to the NFL, he coached at the University of Oregon, Stanford, Rice and Louisiana State. After the Broncos, he started a long line of defensive coordinator positions with the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens before becoming the Niners head coach in 2005. He was also the wide receivers coach for one year, 2001, for the Ravens.
Arguably, Nolan’s job could be even tougher than McDaniels. Although the offense fared rather well even in the more mediocre seasons, the defense has been near or at the league’s bottom. As soon as the new general manager is in place, it is likely that the Broncos will be looking toward both the draft and free agency to bolster their defensive positions.
